Sustaining the Craft Industry in Bolgatanga (SUSCRIB)


This project dubbed, "Sustaining the Craft Industry in Bolgatanga (SUSCRIB)" is in its second phase. The project aims at addressing needs / issues that have over the years limited the contribution of the craft sector to the development of the Upper East Region and indeed Ghana at large to poverty reduction and national development. The Upper East Region of Ghana which is the focus area of this project can be described as the craft capital of Ghana. The region can boast of a number of craft work such as straw baskets popularly called "Bolga Baskets", smock, pottery, leather work among others. The second phase which will run up to mid - 2023 has the following highlights.

  • Support 50 young women to start craft entrepreneurial businesses through an incubation programme called "ISOLVE"

  • Support Baskets weavers to diversify their raw material sources by cultivating vertiver grass and researching into other materials for weaving.

  • Reduce the impact of craft work on the environment by introducing to project participants safe waste disposal methods and energy saving stoves.

  • Support in the organization of the Bolgatanga International Craft and Arts Fair (BICAF)
